State Rep. Greg Alexander voiced his concerns this week about the budget plans for the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, stating that they do not adequately address the needs of rural Michigan.

Alexander, along with state Rep. Ken Borton, proposed amendments aimed at supporting rural communities, including funding for dam repairs and donations to a nonprofit that provides venison to local food banks. However, these amendments were not adopted by the Democrat majority on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture and Rural Development and Natural Resources.

In response, Alexander emphasized the importance of representing the voices of rural communities in the budget process, stating, "Our rural communities must have their voices heard as the budget process plays out." He added, "These recommendations came directly from residents, job providers, industry leaders, wildlife experts and law enforcement personnel throughout our areas – and locals they know their needs better than Lansing."

Expressing disappointment over the rejection of the proposed amendments, Alexander highlighted the disconnect between the budget decisions made in Lansing and the actual needs of the residents. He also criticized the current level of government spending, advocating for cuts to unnecessary expenses to alleviate the financial burden on Michigan residents.

As House Bills 5511-12, containing the appropriations bills for the upcoming fiscal year, move to the House Appropriations Committee, the debate over the budget allocation for rural Michigan continues.
