State Rep. Luke Meerman | Michigan House Republicans
State Representatives Jennifer Wortz and Luke Meerman have called on Michigan farmers to join a tractor rally at the state Capitol on March 18. The event coincides with a House Oversight Committee hearing focused on regulatory challenges in the agriculture sector.
The representatives, both Republicans, are encouraging farmers affected by regulations to share their experiences with the committee. "Out-of-control bureaucracy has heaped heavy burdens on farmers, food processors, and other Michiganders who work hard to put safe, healthy food on tables around the world," said Wortz. She emphasized the need for farmers to make their voices heard at the Capitol.
Wortz and Meerman highlighted several concerns, including water withdrawal restrictions, hazardous waste permit requirements for fruit washing, and overinclusive wetland regulations. These rules reportedly impose significant costs and administrative burdens on the agricultural industry.
Meerman expressed concern about the impact of these regulations on family farms. "The current regulatory environment affecting agriculture is driving many family farms out of business," he stated. He stressed that it is essential for those in the industry to share their stories and advocate for change.
The rally will start at 8 a.m., beginning from 2200 S. Washington Ave. in Lansing, with tractors traveling two miles to gather at the Capitol.
