Twenty years ago, YouTube began its journey with a brief 19-second video filmed at the San Diego Zoo. The platform has since become a significant player in global media, used widely for entertainment, education, and news, while sparking discussions on its influence on media literacy and mental health.
Dan Hiaeshutter-Rice, an assistant professor at Michigan State University (MSU), highlights YouTube's dual role. He notes, "YouTube has provided a robust platform for diverse political voices... At the same time, its technical structure has allowed for users to unwittingly expose themselves to extreme and radicalized content." He continues, noting the role YouTube plays in forming parasocial relationships and echo chambers.
Research specialist Dante Chinni, also from MSU, talks about YouTube's evolution in news media, saying, "In 20 years, YouTube has gone from being a novelty to an important player in the world of news and journalism." He observes that YouTube is integral to the changing landscape of news consumption influenced by algorithms.
The platform's influence on health literacy is addressed by Anjana Susarla, an expert on technology policy and social media regulation. She points out, "An estimated 93% of adults in the United States access the internet... With the vast amount of health information available in multimedia formats... there is an urgent need and a unique opportunity to design an automated approach to curate online health information."
Jacob T. Fisher, an assistant professor, reflects on YouTube's influence on media consumption and mental health, stating, "YouTube has undeniably had a huge influence on the modern media environment... However, there is evidence that over-reliance on YouTube and other video platforms may have negative consequences."
In education, Professor Christine Greenhow notes that YouTube is frequently used for educational purposes. "Today, YouTube is the most popular social media among U.S. adults and teens...to supplement or bridge gaps in traditional education," she remarks.
Lastly, Associate Professor Ayalla Ruvio discusses YouTube's impact on marketing strategies, "In recent years, we have seen a major shift in consumer behavior... YouTube has provided such an alternative, driving brands to turn to influencers and consumer-generated content."
