Congressman Tom Barrett of Michigan has introduced a new bill aimed at improving access to hearing aid services for veterans. As the Chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Technology Modernization, Barrett presented the Veterans Hearing Health Expansion Act in a bid to facilitate easier access to these services.

"Veterans deserve timely, high-quality health care no matter where they live," Barrett stated. The congressman explained that by expanding the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) community care program to include hearing aid specialists, veterans would benefit from added convenience and reduced bureaucratic hurdles. "This bill is a simple fix that will make a big difference, especially for rural veterans, by giving them more options and less red tape when it comes to maintaining their hearing health.”

Currently, the VA Community Care Program covers audiologists, but it does not extend to licensed hearing aid specialists. These specialists are qualified to handle tasks such as fitting, adjusting, and repairing hearing aids. The existing policy means that veterans may have to travel significant distances or wait for lengthy periods to receive care at VA facilities, even for routine hearing aid maintenance.

The proposed legislation seeks to address this issue by allowing veterans to access services provided by licensed hearing aid specialists in their own communities. This would ensure veterans get faster and more convenient care for their hearing needs.
