State Representative Mike Mueller has expressed concern over the current state of morale within the Michigan State Police (MSP). In a statement, he highlighted issues of recruitment, retention, and integrity that have been developing over the past decade. Mueller, who served as an officer for 19 years before his election as a state representative, noted that many current and retired troopers have voiced disappointment with the department's leadership.

Mueller described a decline in morale among troopers and sergeants who were once highly engaged public servants. He attributed this to a leadership culture characterized by favoritism and retaliation. "What was once a culture rooted in merit, integrity and public service has been eroded by a toxic leadership culture," he stated.

He further claimed that recent developments indicate top officials operate with impunity while expecting lower-ranking officers to follow unclear guidelines. This situation has reportedly led to hesitation among troopers to perform their duties due to fear of politically motivated disciplinary actions.

Data shows an increase in early retirements and resignations from experienced officers, along with decreased interest from new recruits. Employee surveys also reflect low optimism and approval of leadership among respondents.

Promotions within MSP are allegedly influenced by personal relationships rather than merit or work ethic. Collaboration with local law enforcement agencies has also deteriorated under current leadership.

Mueller concluded by stating that despite these challenges, MSP troopers continue to serve honorably but under significant strain. He emphasized the need for reform to restore trust within the agency: "The decline of MSP is not inevitable. It can be reversed."

Representative Mueller is recognized as a Navy veteran, decorated retired officer, and chairman of the State Police budget subcommittee.
