State Representative Dave Prestin from Cedar River has issued a statement criticizing Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel's recent legal actions. The statement follows Nessel's announcement of a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration, aiming to stop plans for increased American energy production.
Prestin, a Republican, expressed skepticism about the motivations behind Nessel's lawsuit. "The only announcement made today was that Dana Nessel is fundraising for something," he stated. He further questioned the legitimacy of the lawsuit, suggesting it was an attempt to criticize former President Trump rather than address substantial issues. "It doesn’t matter how baseless a lawsuit can be, if there is an opportunity to raise some cash by calling President Trump evil, Dana Nessel will take it."
In his statement, Prestin highlighted concerns over energy poverty and criticized what he perceives as contradictions in current energy policies. He argued that while there is support for electric vehicles and data plants, there is opposition to necessary mining and baseload energy production. "They claim to want clean water and affordable energy but fight investments into a cleaner and safer Line 5 pipeline at every opportunity," Prestin said.
He warned that successful legal actions by the attorney general could lead to higher costs and environmental degradation. "When people can’t afford or find reliable energy, they turn to filthy alternatives," he noted.
Prestin's comments reflect ongoing debates about energy policy and its implications for both economic stability and environmental health.
