State Representative Mike Mueller testified before the House Oversight Committee regarding a leadership crisis and declining morale within the Michigan State Police (MSP). During his testimony, Mueller called for the retirement of MSP Director Col. James Grady and Chief Deputy Director Lt. Col. Aimee Brimacombe, attributing poor leadership to low morale.
"My goal for doing this was to improve MSP morale, recruitment and retention, and integrity back to the department," Mueller stated in front of the committee. The discussion focused on several controversial actions by MSP leadership. Questions were raised about Brimacombe’s promotion to her current position over more senior officers despite having a disciplinary record.
Mueller also criticized Col. James Grady for requesting performance bonuses for himself and Brimacombe, which he deemed inappropriate amid ongoing issues within the agency. Unions representing troopers and command officers have issued a no-confidence status in Grady's leadership. Additionally, concerns were heightened by Brimacombe’s involvement in approving a $999,999 legal settlement following a complaint received via Facebook from a personal contact.
"I want to stick up for the Michigan State Police and the dedicated troopers who keep our state safe," Mueller remarked after the committee meeting. "We back the blue when we stick up for them against unethical leadership."
