Congressman Tom Barrett, representing Michigan's 7th district and serving as Chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Technology Modernization, has introduced the Patriots Over Politics Act. This legislation aims to restore education benefits for service members whose military careers were terminated due to non-compliance with the Department of Defense’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate.

Barrett expressed concern over the impact of the vaccine mandate on veterans' careers and their families' educational opportunities. "Too many decorated veterans had their careers terminated when they were threatened with a dishonorable discharge for refusing Biden’s COVID vaccine mandate. On top of losing their careers, many of them also lost their ability to transfer their unused educational benefits to their children," said Barrett. He further stated his commitment to addressing this issue: "I’m on a mission to right this injustice for every Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, and Coast Guardsman who made a long-term commitment to serve, only to have the rug pulled out from under them."

The GI Bill provides service members with educational benefits that can be transferred to family members as an incentive for continued service. However, those discharged or pressured into retirement due to vaccine refusal lost this opportunity. The new bill seeks to amend this by allowing service members who served at least six years and left the military between August 24, 2021, and January 10, 2023, to transfer their GI Bill benefits to their children.

Thirteen colleagues have joined Congressman Barrett in supporting this legislative effort.
