Mike Mueller, Michigan State Representative for 72nd District | Michigan House Republicans
State Representative Mike Mueller issued a statement concerning the Michigan State Police (MSP), highlighting a leadership crisis within the agency. According to Mueller, troopers have expressed overwhelming no confidence in Colonel James Grady and Lieutenant Colonel Aimee Brimacombe, with 98% of surveyed members indicating a lack of faith in current leadership.
Mueller criticized Governor Gretchen Whitmer for continuing to support Grady despite the crisis. He questioned whether political image is being prioritized over the integrity and effectiveness of Michigan's top law enforcement agency.
"Colonel Grady and Lt. Colonel Brimacombe’s administration has been marked by deteriorating morale, a lack of trust, and questionable personnel decisions," said Mueller. He pointed out issues such as the promotion of an inexperienced captain who is now under investigation for misuse of a state vehicle, while Lt. Col. Brimacombe has reportedly faced multiple internal affairs investigations.
Mueller emphasized that this issue is not about race or identity but rather about leadership quality. He noted that only 18 officers expressed confidence in Grady and Brimacombe despite MSP's diverse history.
The representative expressed concern over taxpayer dollars spent on employee feedback efforts being disregarded when inconvenient truths are revealed. "The Governor’s inaction sends a clear and troubling message: the rank-and-file don’t matter," he stated.
Mueller highlighted public concerns about MSP's capability to protect residents amid ongoing chaos within its ranks. He urged action from Governor Whitmer, emphasizing that MSP members deserve trustworthy leadership.
Mike Mueller represents Michigan's 72nd House District and chairs the Appropriations Subcommittee on the Michigan State Police.
