Congressman Tom Barrett met with workers and leaders from Michigan’s energy sector at the Enbridge Stockbridge Terminal on Wednesday to discuss the impact of recent federal legislation aimed at increasing domestic energy production. The meeting included representatives from Enbridge, the American Petroleum Institute, and other organizations involved in the state’s energy industry.

Barrett highlighted provisions of the One Big Beautiful Bill, which he helped pass and was signed into law by President Donald Trump in July. According to Barrett, “Unleashing American energy will make paying the electric bill and filling up the gas tank more affordable for mid-Michigan families. That’s exactly what the One Big Beautiful Bill delivers by rolling back red tape and ending taxpayer-funded favors for special interests. We’re finally restoring American energy dominance and opening up the free market to encourage more competition, innovation, and energy production here at home. From lowering energy prices to eliminating tax on overtime for hard workers in the energy sector, the One Big Beautiful Bill is all about lowering costs for working families.”

The Stockbridge Terminal stores crude oil arriving via Line 78 from Griffith, Indiana before it is sent through pipelines to Sarnio, Ontario; Toledo, Ohio; and Detroit. The facility employs 15 people in Michigan.

Industry leaders also discussed further policy proposals focused on building upon measures within the new law, including efforts to streamline permitting processes for infrastructure projects that support long-term certainty for companies operating in this sector.

Chris Zeigler of the American Petroleum Institute said during a roundtable discussion: “Permitting reform is a key pillar of achieving American energy dominance. Without efficient, predictable permitting processes, America can’t meet its growing energy needs. Advancing critical infrastructure projects like the Line 5 Great Lakes Tunnel, which is essential to meeting Michigan’s energy needs, bolsters U.S. energy security and reliability.”

The new law authorizes additional oil and gas leases while removing certain regulations enacted during President Biden's administration. It also eliminates subsidies directed toward specific groups or industries so that various forms of power generation—including oil, natural gas, wind, solar, nuclear—can compete on an even basis.
