Senator Elissa Slotkin, who represents Michigan’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of reflections on community resilience and leadership between August 27 and August 28, 2025.
On August 27, Slotkin addressed recent violence in Minneapolis, drawing parallels to past tragedies in Michigan. She wrote, "My heart is with the Minneapolis community today. As we saw after the Oxford and MSU shootings in Michigan, the road to healing is long and not linear. No child should face this kind of gruesome violence, especially in a place that should be their sanctuary."
Later that day, she commented on leadership and acknowledgment within government service. Slotkin stated on August 27: "Too often, people in power forget those around them who make it possible. I saw that up close when I was serving in Iraq, and senators — some of whom I serve with now — would come for a visit and forget to acknowledge ‘the little people’ supporting them. You better believe I"
The following day, on August 28, Slotkin revisited the aftermath of the Oxford shooting in Michigan. She wrote: "When I think back on the 2021 shooting in Oxford, the immediate aftermath was a blur of pain and tragedy. But I am also heartened when I think about the community that stepped up in those early moments to support, donate and start the recovery process that is still taking place"
Elissa Slotkin has represented Michigan’s 7th District since 2019 after succeeding Mike Bishop. She was born in New York City in 1976 and currently resides in Lansing. Slotkin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University (https://bioguide.congress.gov/search/bio/S001215).
Her recent posts reflect ongoing concerns about gun violence affecting communities nationwide as well as her perspective on leadership shaped by both military service and legislative experience.
