The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will close the Michigan Avenue roundabout southeast of I-94 in Jackson for reconstruction starting Monday, September 29. The closure is part of a larger $162 million project to rebuild roads and bridges along I-94 in Jackson County.
"Across Michigan, we are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy, helping Michiganders go to work, drop their kids off at school and run errands safely," said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. "By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges, supporting thousands of good-paying, local jobs without raising taxes by a dime. This year, let's build on our momentum to pass a bipartisan local road funding plan so we can keep fixing our damn roads and creating good-paying, local jobs."
The roundabout closure is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. on Monday, September 29, and is expected to last until 7 a.m. on Monday, October 13. The overall I-94 rebuilding project is set for completion in November 2025.
During construction, traffic will be rerouted. Eastbound I-94 drivers will use the Parma Road ramps for detours while westbound traffic will be directed to Concord Road and Parma Road ramps. Motorists should expect delays as detours are implemented.
The I-94 corridor serves as an important route for both local travel and national trade. MDOT expects that these improvements will enhance safety and mobility in the area.
According to economic modeling related to the project investment, approximately 1,960 jobs are expected to be supported directly or indirectly by this work.
The multi-year project is funded through Governor Whitmer's Rebuilding Michigan program. The program focuses on major state highways and bridges with high traffic volumes and aims for repairs that extend infrastructure lifespan.
