Michigan Democratic Party leaders have criticized former President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans for their role in a federal government shutdown. The party claims that, despite holding the White House and both chambers of Congress, Republican leadership chose to allow the shutdown rather than address ongoing economic concerns.

According to the Michigan Democratic Party, every Michigan Republican in Congress voted against measures to keep health care costs down. As a result, over 531,000 residents who use the Affordable Care Act marketplace could see their premiums increase significantly at the start of next year.

Curtis Hertel, Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party, stated: “Michigan Republicans from Tom Barrett to John James to Mike Rogers championed the dangerous health care cuts that started this crisis — and they ultimately bear the responsibility for causing this government shutdown. This Republican-created crisis will grind critical services to a halt and make health care even more expensive for working families across Michigan.”

Hertel added: “At the end of the day, this Republican budget and shutdown will hurt Michiganders, and we are proud of our Democratic delegation for standing up for our great state. Democrats will continue to fight tooth and nail to protect working families from the destruction this administration and Republicans in Congress seem intent on causing.”
