One week after voting against a bipartisan state budget, Republican gubernatorial candidate Aric Nesbitt is proposing to rename the Elliott-Larsen Building in Lansing after former President Donald Trump. The Elliott-Larsen Building is named for the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act and its bipartisan sponsors, former Democratic State Representative Daisy Elliott and Republican State Representative Melvin Larsen.
Nesbitt was among five Republicans who voted against the state budget, which includes funding for road repairs, public schools, and Medicaid. Critics have noted that Nesbitt and other Republican candidates have supported Trump’s tax law, which has been linked to reductions in Medicaid funding.
Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Derrick Honeyman commented on the situation: “The Republican gubernatorial primary is a race to the far-right focused on who can show the most loyalty to Donald Trump. Rather than vote to lower costs, protect health care, and fix the damn roads, Aric Nesbitt spends his days focused on renaming buildings after Trump. Michiganders want a governor who stands up for our state, not a shill like Nesbitt.”
