A recent report from The Detroit News indicates that the Trump Administration may use the ongoing federal government shutdown to cancel over $1 billion in federal grants intended for GM and Stellantis, with $800 million potentially affecting Michigan. One specific grant under threat is a $500 million allocation for GM’s Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant. This grant was expected to create 50 new jobs and preserve 650 existing positions for unionized workers.
In 2024, former Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers opposed the grant, calling it a “bad investment” and stating it “shouldn’t move forward,” despite its projected impact on employment at the plant.
Curtis Hertel, Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party, responded to these developments by saying: “Mike Rogers called protecting hundreds of jobs in Michigan a ‘bad investment,’ and now he may get exactly what he wished for if Trump illegally cancels these grants and kills those jobs.
“Mike Rogers owes Michiganders an answer: does he stand with Trump’s plans to use auto workers as pawns for political retribution, or will he finally stand up for the union jobs he helped put at risk in the first place?”
The threatened cancellation of these grants comes as Republicans have not resolved a federal shutdown that has affected various sectors, including auto manufacturing.
