LANSING — Representative John James is facing criticism from a constituent for not taking a public stance on the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files. In a letter published in the Macomb Daily, Katrina Manetta of Shelby Township expressed concern about James’ lack of response. She wrote, “I am deeply concerned by his silence on the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files. I am even more alarmed by how the government shutdown is being used as a political tool to delay a vote that survivors and the public overwhelmingly support.”
James has not signed a Republican-led discharge petition related to the release of the files. The Michigan Democratic Party has started digital advertisements urging James to support making the Epstein files public.
Previously, James was vocal about human trafficking. In 2024, he stated, “I am leading the efforts in Congress to fight human trafficking.” Despite this earlier advocacy, James has not commented on the issue as Epstein’s victims recently held a press conference calling for the files to be released.
Manetta’s letter continued: “Rep. John James has not signed the petition. He has not called for the release of the files. He has not held a town hall or responded to requests from constituents on this issue. While survivors testify in Washington and the public demands transparency, Rep. James remains silent. Seventy-five percent of Americans want the Epstein files released, yet he continues to avoid the issue. Silence is complicity. At a time when leadership and courage are needed, Rep. James is choosing political convenience over truth and justice. His constituents deserve better. It is time for him to speak up and sign on.”
