The Michigan Senate has adopted a resolution introduced by Sen. Michael Webber to recognize the cultural, religious, and historic significance of Diwali, the annual festival celebrated by millions worldwide. The resolution, known as Senate Resolution 80, was passed unanimously on Tuesday.
“Diwali is a special time celebrated by many of our neighbors throughout Metro Detroit and across Michigan. It brings me joy to take time to recognize this wonderful festival in the Michigan Senate,” said Webber, R-Rochester Hills. “Diwali reminds us of an important theme that is shared by many of our faith traditions — light triumphs over darkness and good conquers evil. Hope is universal.”
Members of Metro Detroit’s Indian community attended the session at the state Capitol for the occasion.
Webber has also proposed Senate Bill 17, which would designate Diwali as a state holiday in Michigan. The bill is currently under review by the Senate Committee on Regulatory Affairs.
Diwali, often referred to as the “festival of lights,” derives from a Sanskrit word meaning “row of lamps.” It is observed by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists around the world and emphasizes togetherness, family, charitable giving, and selfless service.
The adopted resolution states: “Michigan remains resolute in its commitment to fostering diversity of experience and religious acceptance. We recognize the Diwali message of tolerance, compassion, and acceptance of others, which resonates with the ideals of the American spirit.”
Sen. Michael Webber welcomed members of Metro Detroit’s Indian community to the Capitol during Tuesday’s recognition event.
