Senator Roger Victory testified before a Michigan Senate committee on Wednesday to advocate for legislation aimed at curbing robocall scams. The proposed bipartisan bills, Senate Bills 351-355, are designed to enhance protections for Michigan consumers, particularly senior citizens, from fraudulent telephone solicitations.
“Michigan families should be able to live their lives without being harassed by scam robocalls,” said Victory, a Republican from Hudsonville. “This bipartisan legislation would make commonsense reforms to put a stop to the robocall scams that take advantage of Michigan consumers, especially our senior citizens.
“These reforms would improve consumer protections and safeguard our residents from malicious and unfair telephone solicitations.”
The legislative package would establish clear rules for telephone solicitors, prohibit them from blocking caller ID or using misleading information, and empower the attorney general to investigate and take civil action against violators. Penalties for targeting vulnerable residents could reach up to $75,000.
Victory noted that the bills are currently under review by the Senate Committee on Finance, Insurance and Consumer Protection. He expressed confidence that the committee would soon advance the measures to the full Senate for consideration.
