Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced that the Department of Attorney General has taken over prosecutorial duties in Luce County. This action comes after Thomas Evans, who previously served as Luce County Prosecutor, was appointed as the Lake County Prosecuting Attorney.

The Department began supporting local cases on October 14, following discussions with staff from the Luce County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and district court officials. State resources have been allocated to ensure continued prosecution during this period.

Nessel stated, “Protecting public safety and securing justice requires uninterrupted prosecution. I am relieved that the new state budget gives my office the resources needed to step in and support local prosecutor’s offices to maintain critical services when vacancies arise. We are committed to ensuring that the people of Luce County experience no disruption during this transition period.”

The Department of Attorney General has a history of providing support to county prosecutor offices facing vacancies, having assisted Houghton, Lake, and Ontonagon counties in similar situations. The Department will continue its role in Luce County until a new prosecuting attorney is appointed.
