A bipartisan initiative aimed at enhancing school safety has been enacted into state law. The legislative package, led by Representatives Luke Meerman (R-Coopersville) and Kelly Breen (D-Novi), marks the culmination of efforts by the School Safety Task Force.
The task force was formed in 2021 by former House Speaker Jason Wentworth following the Oxford school tragedy. Its purpose was to explore policy solutions to prevent violence against students and teachers. Comprising four Republicans and four Democrats, the group worked collaboratively to improve safety protocols and address mental health needs in schools. Meerman chaired the task force, with Breen as the lead Democrat.
In its final report, the task force outlined recommendations drawn from listening sessions and discussions with various stakeholders including students, parents, educators, law enforcement, and behavioral health experts.
The new laws aim to close gaps in existing systems to better protect Michigan's students. "These bills reflect a proactive approach to ensure threats are recognized earlier and students’ unique individual needs are met," stated Meerman. He emphasized that addressing mental health is crucial for preventing school violence.
Breen added, "This bipartisan package helps schools prevent acts of violence or self-harm... Kids cannot learn unless they feel physically and mentally safe."
The newly signed legislation includes Public Acts 263, 264, 270, 271, and 272 of 2024.
